Last weekend, Kim Kardashian urged one of her Twitter followers not to undergo plastic surgery to try to look like her. "Don't try 2 b someone else," she tweeted. She was right, because, looking like her is not really healthy!
She further advised in that Twittervention that she should not "change yourself for anybody but yourself." Because face it, Kim Kardashian follower, the quest to look like Kim Kardashian, or any celebrity for that matter, is never healthy.
A 2008 anecdotal survey done by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported celebrity influence on cosmetic surgeries. Brad Pitt's abs and nose and George Clooney's eyes had the most influence on men. Jolie's lips and eyes, Jennifer Lopez's buttocks, Kidman's nose and Pamela Anderson's breasts had the most influence on women.
Let's elucidate this.
To have Angelina Jolie's lips, for instance, is healthier than saying they want to look like Jolie. The difference lies in the fact that this patient is only describing a physical attribute as a reference to relay to the doctor what she wants.
On the other hand, when a patients desires to look like a celebrity, it may signal some psychological issue such as low self-esteem to more complicated problems such as borderline personality disorder or psychosis. And when that plastic procedure will be performed on them, it is highly likely that they will never be satisfied. That's contradictory to plastic surgery's purpose, which is to make you feel comfortable.
Moreover, Hollywood trends and the 'it' person fluctuates with time and plastic surgery is permanent. Imagine looking so 2010 in the year 2030? In patients with such requests, it is more appropriate to address their psychological issues first.
What may be a plea for surgery might be easily (solved) with such simple solutions such as a facial, a fashion makeover, or a fashion makeover on TV.
Or maybe a new pet.
It is much more gratifying, not to mention healthy, to look like a the best version of your self. And despite the corny cliche, true beauty is timeless and really radiates from within.
